Everyone has certain memories that are triggered by hearing some music that brings them back to another time in your life. Well, I'm not going to talk about that. I found a photo that brings me back to a time and place, and a song that I used to hear while at that place. Now, being the youngest in the family, even though my Father worked at Kodak, they must have been bored of taking pictures of kids by then, cause aren't a bunch of pictures of me from my younger days. Fewer still in the late 70s. So it's kind of strange this photo may be one of a couple at age 21. I had been working at this job for about 5 or 6 months. In February 1977, I worked the midnight shift for about six weeks. We were testing a copier, and in order to finish on time, we needed to work a third shift. Being one of the low-men on the totem pole, I was volunteered. There were three of us around the same age, and three or four temporary operators. We had an old style Polaroid professional type b&w instant camera (for taking photos of failures for engineers to see). So we setup this photo using a tripod and the timer. Hard at Work The Charlie Manson looking character is Larry Rossi from Irondequoit. The guy on the right is Don Bodnar from Rochester. I still see and talk to Larry, we are actually meeting this Friday at Crummers after work. That period was pretty memorable. If you were around the winter of 1977, it wasn't a very nice one. We also were working in an environmental chamber, where it might be 80 degrees, 80% humidity, or 60 degrees, 20% humidity. The posters kind of give away the year (I had no part in the wall decorations, they were already there. By the way, those would land one in serious trouble if displayed on a wall at work today). That winter/spring were the only times I've ever had to work the midnight shift. Once and a while we'd go out for "lunch". Usually around 2:30AM or so. Sometimes we would go to Jay's Diner on West Henrietta Rd. Being the naive country boy, the city kids would have to point out the ladies of the evening and their pimps having something to eat after the bars closed. The other thing I remember was Dogs. We always had WCMF on the radio. At the time, Uncle Roger McCall was the midnight to 6AM DJ. Everynight, around 3AM he would play "Dogs" by Pink Floyd. The album "Animals" was just out, and I guess Uncle Rog really liked it. So when I see that picture, I can still hear the dogs howling in the middle of the night.
