Yearbooks Project

Over the years, I have scanned hundreds of pages of Wayne Eagle yearbooks, using various flatbed scanners that I have owned. It is fairly tedious, as the bound books don’t often fit on the platen very well, they are hard to get straight, the center binding area is often cut-off, there are often moire effects that degrade the image, and a lot of editing often is required to get a decent image. It also puts stress on the binding of the yearbook. It is a very slow process, which is why I have only completely scanned two yearbooks to date.

I just ordered a new type of document scanner which will hopefully be much faster and easier to scan complete yearbooks. Assuming that it pans out and I scan all the yearbooks that I have in my possession, I will be looking to scan yearbooks that I don’t have here so they can be put online. I will try to contact the Ontario Historian, Ontario Public Library, and Wayne Central Library to see if what yearbooks they might have and if my system is portable enough to take on the road. My guess is that there will still be yearbooks that I cannot access, so I am hoping maybe some alumni could loan me yearbooks so they can be scanned. Yearbooks that are heavily signed may not be good subjects for scanning. I can edit out some stuff, but it would be difficult to try and edit many pages of personal text that is over photos or other text.

Local is probably best, but even shipping back and forth can work. I think I can access most of the 50s, and have many of the 60s and early 70s, so basically all yearbooks from 1977-2000 are definitely ones I don’t not have, and also anything from 2008 onward. I hope the school can help me out with these, as I don’t think too many alumni from that era are visitors here.

So watch this page, as I will put out a call for yearbooks to borrow to complete this task as I progress through this project.

Registration for Alumni Directory Available Again

Some effort has been made to re-enable a registration system again for the website, and also create an alumni directory display similar to what we had previously. An improved registration form has been created to help with this, as the one tried a few years ago was lacking.

Unfortunately, for the 50 or so people who registered a few years ago, you probably received an email (I did) saying your account was deleted. It was necessary as we had to change the database. You will need to re-register if you want to be in the directory.

Hopefully methods to help avoid spam will work. If not, there might be additional steps that can be taken.

Al Gentile Scholarship Fund

Hello Fellow Wayne Alumni, I hope you are all well and striving to move forward!

As Wayne Central is preparing to graduate another class of seniors, I would like to seek your assistance in this exciting event of their lives. It has been eight years since the passing of my father Al Gentile in 2013. At that time my sisters and I set up a memorial scholarship award to a graduating senior. We established this award to preserve Al’s legacy to the Wayne Central student community. This Wayne senior is chosen among student athletes who have
demonstrated good sportsmanship and have made significant contributions both in the classroom and to their sport.

A committee of teaching staff review the candidates and make their selection. The college bound senior receives a $500 scholarship towards their tuition. The Al Gentile Scholarship Fund is managed by the Wayne Central School District. The fund is running low and we are petitioning fellow Wayne Alumni to consider making a monetary contribution to keep the Eagle Pride alive. No amount is too small and will help our fellow Wayne student.

This scholarship has been very appreciative by our senior scholar athlete both male and female. The award is presented at the Graduation ceremony where I have the opportunity to meet and personally congratulate each recipient.

You may send your contributions by check payable to:
Wayne Central School District

PO Box 266
Ontario Center, NY 14520

Please make attention to: Al Gentile Scholarship Fund
Thanks for keeping the Wayne memories alive!! Go Blue and Gold !!!

Sincerely,
Tom , Debby, Pam, and Renee

Looking For Alumni to Post Site Content

Sorry for the lack of new posts the last few months, just been awfully busy. I’m still looking for people who might want to create and add content occasionally for this site. It is quite simple using the system we have in place. I would just have to provide logins and probably point you to a short video on how to use it (if you’d even need it).

This is the type of content that would be nice to have people contribute:

  • Alumni News – can be just about anything of interest to all or some sub-group of alumni
  • Photos – same thing, yearbooks, reunions, old photos, etc
  • School History – if anyone would like to author some articles about school history that could appear sporadically, that would be nice
  • Sports – occasional reports on current school teams
  • What’s New at the Schools – how things have changed

If anyone is interested, you can contact me (minus spaces) at: b d o n o v a 1 (at) r o c h e s t e r . r r . c o m

9th Annual Wayne Basketball Alumni Game

Hello!
Hoping everyone can make it out again for the 9th annual Wayne Basketball Alumni Game, which is set for Saturday, January 7, 2017,@ 11:00 am at the High School. Games and teams will be set up similar to last year so there will be time to rest and socialize in between games.

A $10 Donation will go to the Connor Burns Ideal Teammate Scholarship, established to honor the memory of Connor, who passed away in 2009. This donation will also help fund the Kyle Stewart memorial scholarship as well. Kyle passed away in 2014.

The hope is that many will join together to honor and remember both of these fine young men. Money will be collected that day.

Please respond as soon as possible to let John know if you will be there.
Text John Cotsonas at 585-737-fivethreezerofour.

This is helpful so he can have a general idea of teams before game day! Also, PLEASE pass this info along to any other basketball alumni- there are many others out there who may want to play or just come and visit with old friends!

We’re Back

It took some gentle prodding, but I was persuaded to give this another go.  Since the site needed major updates, and the cost at the previous host was not insignificant, I decided to take advantage of initial lower rates for 3 years by switching to a different hosting service.  I also switched to a mostly WordPress based web-site for managing content.  This will make things easier to manage, and I can take advantage of many available features as needed.

One major benefit is the site is now friendlier to mobile devices.

I was able to restore the posts from the old site.  Many of the posts, like the old Yearbook Picture of the Week posts, will be missing the photo, and some links may not work.  I might be able to fix those at some point, but not the first priority.

It will take some time to restore some of the other pages.  I don’t expect the email directory to be back, it outlived it’s usefulness.  I will restore the In Memory section.  Yearbook pictures is another area that will be recreated in some fashion.  Most of the sports info too.

It will take some time, but hopefully not too long.

Thanks to our supporters for funding the website hosting for the next 3 years:

  • David Wilson Sr.
  • Carla Tarana Boerman
  • Gary Foos
  • Cheryl Bamford Conte
  • Diana Mattuzzi

7th annual Wayne Basketball Alumni Game

Hello!
We are hoping everyone can join us again for the 7th annual Wayne Basketball Alumni Game, which is set for Saturday, January 3, 2015,@ 11:00 am at the High School. Games and teams will be set up similar to last year so there will be time to rest and socialize inbetween games.

A $10 Donation will go to the Connor Burns Ideal Teammate Scholarship, established three years ago to honor the memory of Connor, who passed away in 2009.

We are all so deeply saddened by the passing of Kyle Stewart, who we lost last month. The coaching staff will be starting a scholarship in his name to honor and remember him.

We hope you can all join us to honor and remember both of these fine young men. Money will be collected that day.

Please respond as soon as possible to let us know if you will be joining us. This is helpful so we can have a general idea of teams before game day! Also, PLEASE pass this info along to any other basketball alumni- we know there are many others out there who may want to play or just come and visit with old friends!

Future of Website

Apologies to all for lack of updates on this website in the last several months. Lack of time and motivation.  After doing this for 17 years, I’m a little burned out.   As another bill for the website will be coming soon, time to reevaluate options. Changes in the internet world have relegated parts of this site to be somewhat obsolete. These are some possibilities:

  1. Shut down the site when the current term is up
  2. Have someone else take it over
  3. Enable contributions to cover costs
  4. Re-vamp the site using WordPress as a content management system and include more contributors
  5. Move much of content to Facebook, drop the website.  Allow others to manage it going forward.

#1 is easiest for me. New registrations have dropped to maybe 1 per month. There is a huge amount of content, here, but not much new added recently.

#2 would be some effort, but I’d rather see it kept going in some form.

#3 Though $100-$150 / year may not seem like much, over 10 years it is pretty significant. Every year, it gets harder to renew. 20-25 people /year donating $5.00 would be all it would take to remove any financial issues.

#4 is something I’ve been planning, but it is a major effort and haven’t had time. It would make things easier to manage in the long run, and allow more contributors to the site.  Depends on #3 and whether there is enough interest in keeping a website going.

#5 Facebook is free, allows more user interaction, but would allow news and photo sharing. Some people refuse to use Facebook however.

#6 Maybe something else I haven’t thought of?

Feel free to comment or send me an email.
